Frequently Asked Questions
Question:
Does the Authority have any policies to assist individuals with disabilities?
Answer:
Yes. The Authority reserves a certain number of parking spaces at each of its terminals for use as handicapped parking spaces. The Authority also allows preferred spaces to be reserved in advance by eligible customers who must travel with their vehicles due to their disabilities; provided, however, that such reservations must be made in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Customer Handbook. The Authority also allows the preferential boarding of vehicles of individuals traveling on a standby basis and who must travel with the vehicles due to their disabilities, in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the Customer Handbook. In certain emergency situations, the Authority also allows the preferential boarding of a customer's vehicle so that an individual can receive emergency medical care on the mainland which is not available on the island, in accordance with the Authority's Emergency Transportation Policy. Finally, individuals with disabilities who are year-round residents of Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket are eligible for discounted passenger fares, and blind passengers travel for free with an identification from either the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind or a similar agency of another State.
